Depends on the situation. I play from memory, read music and improvise. A good Pianist should be able to do all three fluently, regardless of style. However, in Classical Music, the art of improvising has been lost over the centuries...

Because of my Tinnitus condition (constant high-pitch ringing in the ears) I can not perform much anymore. However, I play Piano at home almost every day and also teach Music in a Music School. So, I play just for the love of Music. It makes me feel good!!!

A: Play in the famous Artist's BandB: Audition for the famous Artists and/or his/her Band
C: Perform for a famous Artist, like a Concert or Gig

In each case, I would like for myself the following:
A: Play in Miles Davis Sextet with Miles on Trumpet, John Coltrane on Tenor Sax, Cannonball Adderley on Alto Sax, Ron Carter on Bass and Tony Williams on Drums.B: I'd like to audition for the Cosmic Big Band for the great Gig in heaven, just to make sure I don't have to play with Kenny G when I die!
C: I'd like to perform a Concert where Bill Evans (Pianist), Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington and Count Basie are in the audience. That's all folks.  less
